Winter happiness in the heart of South Tyrol

When the Schlern drapes its white cloak over us and the forest around our mountain house sleeps under a thick blanket of snow, life at Hofer Alpl becomes even quieter than you might be used to during the warmer months. Indeed, one could say winter here is almost mystical, so still does it become. We are situated beyond the Seiser Alm, on the other side directly beneath the Schlern. Far from the hustle and bustle of the ski slopes, you will find the long-awaited peace of mind in our secluded location.

Important note for winter lovers

As nature takes its well-deserved break, we also shift down a gear. This means we have a short winter season. We are open throughout the spring, summer, and autumn; however, after Epiphany (6th Jan), we close until April. Crucially, this means we are your base for adventures in the silence during both Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Because it is particularly beautiful to spend these two holidays in a warm mountain sanctuary, we have put together special packages for you.

Ice skating

A swimming lake in summer, an ice rink in winter: the small lake known as Völser Weiher lies nestled in the forest and is a popular spot for quiet reflection just below Hofer Alpl. There is also skate hire available at the lake!

The region around the Schlern offers stunning ascents and descents—provided the snow conditions are right. This is mountain bliss at full throttle – feel free to take us literally!

The thrill of the sledge

When the reward at the end is a proper toboggan run, even children forget the effort of the climb. It’s the best way to motivate them to enjoy fresh air and exercise in the cold season! So, visit us with your family, hire a sledge from us, and give your "peace of mind" a temporary break as you whiz down towards the valley. Feet on the runners, a smile on your face—taking the corners at speed! This is fun for the whole family: parents usually find they’re doing themselves a favour with a sledging session too!

Your cheeks will be a healthy red when you step out of the cold into our warm "Stube". Here, a spot filled with pure peace of mind awaits you—and once you open the menu, you’ll find it’s full of hints of true mountain bliss. Our winter kitchen is traditional and restorative, hearty and warming. From rich soups and locally hunted game to traditional dumpling dishes—we serve meals created from refined local products that warm you from the inside out.

Fauna in the cold season

Searching for tracks in the glittering white

As soon as the snow covers the plants, many animals retreat into hibernation or a state of winter rest, but some remain active. This turns the fresh snow into a thrilling storybook of nature. Deer and chamois leave paired hoofprints as they search for food under the cover of the trees. You might cross the perfectly straight track of a fox ("registering"), find the leaping prints of a hare, or the fan-like marks of ptarmigans.

Not sure which animal a track belongs to? Take a photo and ask Lukas! As a hunter, outdoorsman, and local, he knows the terrain better than anyone. With a bit of luck, patience, and a good pair of binoculars, you can even spot the chamois on the snow-free steep slopes!
